Frequently Asked Questions

What apples are best for apple rose tarts?

Any baking apple will work well in these apple rose tarts. I recommend using Cosmic Crisp, Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji.

How do you slice apples for a tart?

how-to-slice-the-apples

The apple slices need to be thin enough to be pliable and roll up easily. Start by chopping each apple in half, then remove the core. You can then slice each apple half into thin slices using a mandolin or a very sharp knife.

What is the difference between an apple pie and an apple rose tart?

Tarts only have bottom crusts, whereas pies usually have top and bottom crusts. These tarts are also made out of puff pastry which is similar in flavor to pie dough but tends to be more flakey.

How to Store Leftover Apple Rose Pastry

Leftover apple rose tarts should be individually wrapped in plastic wrap and then stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. You can enjoy chilled apple tarts at room temperature or warmed up in the microwave for about 15 seconds.

Recipe Variations

  • Not a big fan of apricots? Try swapping out your apricot preserve for any other jam or jelly that you desire! I recommend blackberry, peach, or raspberry.
  • Have gluten sensitivity or intolerance? You can make these apple rose tarts gluten-free by swapping out the puff pastry for a homemade or store-bought gluten-free pie crust.
  • Try using some store-bought or homemade caramel sauce to make caramel apple rose tarts! Replace the apricot preserves with a layer of caramel for a warm and sugary surprise!

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Be sure to slice your apples very thin! The thinner the apple, the easier it will be to roll it into the rose shape.
  • When adding your apples, I recommend placing them so that all of the curves of the apples (not the straight edges) are in a continuous line. That way, when the puff pastry is rolled, the petals all look relatively even!
  • If you don’t have cooking spray, try using cupcake wrappers in your muffin tin and make apple rose tart cakes!

Prep Time 55 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry
  • 2 Apples
  • Apricot Preserves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • Powdered Sugar (optional)
  • Ingredient Notes
  • Apples—Sliced thin with the skin on.
  • Puff Pastry—Store bought is easiest to work with, but you can also make your favorite homemade version.
  • Apricot Preserves—Can be swapped out for the jam or jelly of your preference.
  • Lemon Juice—Prevents the apples from oxidizing
  • Cinnamon—Just a pinch will add a warm, earthy flavor.
  • Powdered Sugar—An optional garnish.

Instructions

  1.  Thaw your puff pastry (this usually takes about 40 minutes from frozen).
  2. Preheat oven to 350℉ and spray your muffin tin with a baking spray.
  3. Roll out your puff pastry dough on a floured surface, it should be about 10 inches by 14 inches when rolled out, but this does not need to be exact. Cut into 6 equal strips, going in the same direction the lines from the original folds in the pastry dough are, and lay horizontally.
  4. Start boiling water.
  5. Spread a thin layer of apricot preserves over one side of the strips.
  6. Cut the apples in half, core the apples, and slice very thin.
  7. Stop boiling the water, add the lemon juice and cinnamon, and then add in all of the apple slices and let sit for at least 5 minutes.
  8. Line the apples up on puff pastry, covering the upper half of the pastry and slightly overlapping the apple slices, skin side up.
  9. Fold the bottom half up onto the apple slices and then start rolling the puff pastry from one end until you get to the other end.
  10. Place in your muffin tin. Repeat with the remaining puff pastry strips.
  11. Bake for about 30-35 minutes. Allow to cool, remove from muffin tin, and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Equipment Needed:

  • Muffin tin
  • Cutting Board & Knife
  • Saucepan & strainer
  • Parchment paper

  • Try to slice the apples as thin as you can, the thinner they are the easier it will be to roll your roses.
  • When you get to the point where you roll up the rose, it is alright to push the pastry dough up onto the apples on both sides to help keep it on the apple slices and in line.
