I absolutely love celebrating with friends on the 4th of July! There is something about getting together and having fun BBQing, enjoying fireworks, and eating festive treats like this 4th of July cake balls.
These cake balls are so easy to make and so festive. You will love how easy they are to serve while everyone sits back and watches the fireworks together and enjoys a fun treat! It is the perfect dessert finger food that makes no mess even with the kids!
Ingredients
- 1 9×13 cake, any flavor you like; boxed, homemade, or store-bought.
- Red, white, and blue candy melts. * You could also use 2 (4 oz) white chocolate bars or white chocolate chips in place of the white candy melts.
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles
- Candy star sprinkles
Frosting
- 7 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 tsp milk, half and half, or cream
- 1 ¾ cup powdered sugar
- 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
How to Make 4th of July Cake Balls
- Bake or buy a cake, and cool completely.
- Make frosting by adding butter, powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla to a large bowl and mixing until combined with a hand or stand mixer.
- Crumble the cooked, cooled cake in the bowl over the frosting and combine using your hands or low speed with a mixer.
- Once you have combined the cake and frosting, form them into balls about a tablespoon in size and put the balls on a sheet tray.
- Melt the white chocolate or candy melts in a bowl. If the chocolate is thick, you can add a small amount of milk to thin it out.
- Put a ball of cake in the melted white chocolate, rolling it around the bowl to coat it evenly. Transfer the coated ball to a tray covered with parchment paper and allow the chocolate to dry.
- Melt about a half cup each of the blue and red candy melts and drizzle them over the top of the dried cake balls. Top with sprinkles and candy stars.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- If you are using Wilton melts they usually need to be thinned with milk. I love the kits because they are cute, but I find that the melts from Michaels melt better.
- After you have made your cake balls you will want to chill them in the fridge to help them set before serving.
- Be sure to add your sprinkles quickly before the chocolate hardens.
- A mini ice cream scoop or a cookie scooper works great for forming the balls to ensure they are all the same amount.
