Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make green bean casserole ahead of time?

Absolutely you can! Make the mixture as instructed and then you can refrigerate it for up to 3 days. Make sure to take it out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you plan to bake it!

How do you keep green bean casserole from getting mushy?

Make sure you don’t overbake it. Sometimes I’ll add cornstarch to the casserole mixture to make sure it doesn’t turn soupy.

How to Store and Reheat Easy Green Bean Casserole

Green Bean Casserole is stored best in Tupperware in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for up to 5 days and will be as good as new when reheated. It can also be stored in the pan that was used to cook it but make sure it has had plenty of time to cool and it is covered with plastic wrap or tin foil.

The casserole can be reheated using the oven or the microwave. If the casserole becomes too dried out when reheating, try adding some milk, chicken broth, or extra cream of mushroom soup. Simply heat the casserole until warmed to your liking.

Serving Suggestions

Green Bean Casserole goes great with turkey, ham, or really any holiday classic! It’s also known to go great with seared scallops and mac and cheese. You can never go wrong serving this veggie casserole alongside some mashed potatoes and garlic bread.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 40 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 14.5 oz cans French cut green beans
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 ½ cups French fried onions
  • Green Beans—I prefer the ease of canned beans, but frozen or even fresh will work.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup—This Campbell's classic adds a rich flavor that is to die for!
  • Worcestershire Sauce—This sweet and spicy molasses sauce adds depth of flavor.
  • Black Pepper—Helps accentuate the other flavors and perfectly seasons the meal.
  • French Fried Onions—My favorite component of the dish! It adds a crunchy texture that brings all the ingredients together!

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Drain the cans of green beans and place them in a bowl with the black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, cream of mushroom soup, and one cup of the French onions. Fold the ingredients together.
  3. Pour the casserole into a baking dish and cook for 35 minutes.
  4. Remove the dish from the oven and top with the remaining fried onions. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can store this casserole in the fridge for about 5 days.
  • Some of the liquid in the cream of mushroom soup will cook off in the oven, giving this casserole a nice, thick consistency.
  • You can also use fresh green beans if you would like; however, it is important to note that the green beans will not be as soft after cooking if they are fresh.
  • I don’t like to add salt to this recipe since there is already salt in the cream of mushroom soup.
